We should all count, officials say, on American forces being greeted in Iraq as liberators, not conquerors.

I keep having all these images of children and old men running up to the tanks with flowers and songs, and then some suicide bomber in the group going off.

An absence of doubt

The line

Almost unnoticed after Sunday's pep rally in the Azores was a pledge by Bush to seek new Security Council resolutions to broaden participation in (and not just financing of) Iraq's postwar reconstruction and governance. Yesterday, officials said that each phase is almost unthinkable without UN assistance.

is fascinating. This could be a real tell. I'm trying to not be cynical, but I've stated in the past that the SOP of this administration is "wrapping and agenda". I believe, I know what the neo-con agenda is for Iraq. The tell will be to see if this "broader participation" is only wrapping. I'm tempering my skepticism in an attempt to get a more unbiased view, but I won't don blinders.
