David Ray:

"I found the French position to be downright bizarre. To say that under no circumstances would they authorize force??? That was tantamount to saying, "Saddam, if it is up to us, you can just keep doing what you've been doing".

Because the position made no sense from a diplomatic standpoint, you can only assume there was an ulterior motive (i.e., one intended to have some consequence, not for Iraq, but for the UNSC)."

Nevertheless, an exceedingly successful diplomatic coup for France,at least in the short term, even though for some of us, exceedingly cunning and deceptive as a diplomatic strategy...

France's threatened veto to any use of force in any circumstances, effectively defused the strength of any possible diplomatic efforts by US...Sort of like dictating that the heavyweight champion can only step into the ring with any future challengers if he agrees to have one arm tied behind his back!!!

P.S. I'm not American and generally am opposed to violence/war. In this conflict, one of 3 things had to occur to prevent violence/war:

1. Hussein disarm 4 months ago.
2. France float a list of conditions that included use of force.
3. US to accept a negotiation process that excluded the use of force in any/all circumstances thereby significantly denuding it of its diplomatic power.

How one feels about Mr. Bush's ultimatum delivered last evening is determined to a large extent by how one judges the "real" efforts made by each participant in 1 to 3 above to avoid war...
