I read Scientific American pretty regularly, but I have missed the issue you mention.

Assuming that belief in the afterlife originated with the Homo Sapiens, can we infer from this that this was one of the causes of their survival, or that this was another effect (along with survival) higher brain functions?

By the way, it seems Neanderthals also had ritual burials with artifacts:

Burial of the dead
Estimated age: 100,000 years
Location: Europe and the Middle East

Archaeologists have discovered numerous Neanderthal skeletons apparently buried deliberately in caves. The placement of these specimens and artifacts indicates some form of ritualized burial.
