Any smokers out there? Cigarettes may be becoming VERY expensive.

07:09 ET U.S. seeks $289 bln in cigarette makers' profits - NYT : The New York Times reports that the Justice Dept is demanding that the nation's biggest cigarette makers (MO, RJR, LTR, BTI, VGR) be ordered to forfeit $289 bln in profits derived from a half-century of "fraudulent" and dangerous marketing practices. That figure, if endorsed by Judge Gladys Kessler of Federal District Court when United States vs Philip Morris et al goes to trial next year, would exceed the $206 bln that the industry agreed to pay 46 states in the 1998 settlement and if successful could threaten to bankrupt the American tobacco industry.
