Well, certainly the U.S. is the best country in the world to make a living. No other country in the world offers the opportunities to make something of yourself. You can literally go from rags to riches in the U.S.

But, I've traveled quite a bit. And I have to tell you the U.S. could learn a thing or two about manners from other countries. Other countries seem more civilized when it comes to the way they treat each other. Australia, Canada and England are all very polite and friendly. European countries give their citizens 4 or 5 weeks vacation, while people in the U.S. slave away for 2 weeks vacation. Other countries provide universal health care for their citizens.

So, I'd say while the U.S. is a great place to make a living; the U.S. is lacking in some important quality of life issues like manners, friendliness and vacation time. The U.S. is not the best country in history when it comes to these factors in life.

It goes without saying that no country in the history of the world has been better than the US but one of the things that has made us great is a constant striving to be even better. We have never been at our best when comparing ourselves to history but when we have compared ourselves to what we can be.
