Eagleburger: Anti-Bush Dems 'Over the Edge,' Carter 'Despicable'

Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger said
Monday night that leading Democrats like Sen. Tom
Daschle who continue to criticize President Bush as
America prepares for war were "going over the edge,"
adding that the recent conduct of ex-President Jimmy
Carter was particularly "despicable."

"I must tell you, when we are this close to putting
troops in harm's way.... I do think that the Democrats
now are close to going over the edge," Eagleburger told
Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."

"I must tell you, as far as President Carter is
concerned, I think what he has done for some months now
is in fact despicable," the former Secretary of State
for Bush's father added.

In language especially harsh given Eagleburger's Foggy
Bottom credentials, the one-time top diplomat continued
to slam Carter, recalling, "He did it ten years ago with
regard to the first Kuwait war, where he called other
leaders around the world and told them not to agree with
the first President Bush. He's doing it again."

Then Eagleburger reiterated, "I think he is despicable."

The former Bush administration official said that while
he wouldn't use the word "traitors" to describe
Democrats who continue to criticize Bush on the eve of
war, he explained, "When you're about to put American
troops in harm's way, I think it's time now to call an
end to that partisanship."
