Cowen and JPM on AMAT

Cowen adjusts AMAT numbers
9:22 AM EST
Cowen reported that it lowered Applied Materials' 2003 and 2004 EPS estimates to 12 cents from 13 cents and to 44 cents from 48 cents, respectively. A 14% headcount reduction creates a long-term buy opportunity, the broker said.

AMAT numbers cut at J.P. Morgan
8:26 AM EST
J.P. Morgan said it now expects Applied Materials to earn 9 cents this year and 11 cents in fiscal 2004. Transition to 300 mm has been challenging, and the company has not been able to cut costs fast enough. Neutral rating.
