<Ari Fleischer just this morning said that everyone is entitled to express his opinion>

I listened to the whole exchange. First, he attacked the Dems for their hesitant nit-picking of Bush's war. He made the "criticism is unpatriotic" statement, that I've heard repeatedly lately. Then, several reporters said exactly what I just said, that this amounts to an attempt by the Administration to wrap themselves in the flag and silence dissent. Then, Ari said, "everybody is entitled to express their opinion." It was a throw-away statement, contradicting what he had just said. It sounded as insincere as when Bush says he's in favor of a Palestinian State.

This is just like their support for democracy in Turkey and Mexico and the UN: "we support democracy, as long as the decision goes our way. If votes go against us, then they are illegitimate."

>>"the Democrats who disagree with us need to shut up; it's unpatriotic"

Ari Fleischer just this morning said that everyone is entitled to express his opinion.

William, haven't typed with you before, at least I don't remember doing so. Welcome.

That comment of Fleischer's strikes me as pretty common. Generally, it comes after some other comment which means that criticism of Bush is unpatriotic (my term, Fleischer has some different ones). Then a hurried check of terms and he offers something on the order of "everyone is entitled to express his opinion."

I heard Warner, lost his first name in some dead memory cell, the Senator from Virginia last night, do that trick, talking about Daschle's comment.

We know why they do it; they think it gives them political mileage. But it certainly coarsens the political debates. Why not just say they disagree and move on.

I hate having to answer to Ari Fleisher.
His job description is way too powerful.
Someone allowed to negotiate diplomacy from the Podium (non-starters) should have to be confirmed.

CNN just saying "America may execute a "Small" military engagement before the 48 hours to get Saddam's attention."

{Well this takes the heat off the Japanese diplomats who delivered their ultimatum after they struck Pearl Harbor.}

Our children have been taught that rules are made to be broken better by President Bush than any other president.
