Stocks and Dollar Jump as Troops Move Closer to Iraq by Jes Black

No Key Data

US stock futures and European bourses soared following news that US troops had moved into the demilitarized zone between Iraq and Kuwait. But the S&P futures were unable to break overnight highs at 872.50, which could have a bearish implication for both stocks and the dollar today since the dollar was also unable to break overnight highs against the Swiss franc. USD rose to new highs against the yen and sterling while edging closer to overnight highs against the euro and Swiss franc. The lack of follow thru buying seen due to traders not wanting to add to the rally following such a strong rise over the past week.

Despite the knee jerk reaction this morning to the lastest war news, the dollar basically held to a tight range this morning ahead of tonight's deadline imposed on Saddam Hussein by President Bush to leave Iraq or face military action. Meanwhile, Saddam Hussein has rejected those demands, and has instead been preparing Iraq for war. Meanwhile, markets have basically discounted a short successful war and now await the onset of military action, which could take place as early as this week. While currency traders have bid the dollar higher in anticipation, the dollar and stocks appear poised for a short-term correction following their strong gains. But volatility should remain high this week.

In other news, the Turkish government is expected to grant approval this morning for an American request to use the country's airspace for missions against Iraq. Recall that earlier this month, the Turkish parliament rejected a US request to allow US troops into the country to open a northern front to the Iraq campaign. A recent change in the government now means the US may indeed succeed in getting overflight permission, but not in placing its troops there.

No key economic indicators for the US or Canada are scheduled for release on Wednesday.
