They are a start, however I think Turkey could the role model for the area. We will see. It will probably be up to the new provisional gov to chose its particular form of gov.

Well, Qatar is so small it would be difficult to suggest it as a model for a larger country. However, the way in which Qatar has gone about it is, I think, going to lead to a more robust form of democracy in Qatar than in Turkey; but they're only part of the way there yet.

At any rate, the argument that democracy can't or isn't coming to the region is not reasonable. With Qatar, Turkey, and the significant interest in Iran, it is clear that the possibility of a strong move toward democracy in the region is not only possible, but likely. These things can take years to complete, but the die can be cast by a simple turn of political events, and it is possible we are on the brink of seeing such a turn.

Turkey- the role model for the area? Turkey's been a democracy for 80 years, and they're in danger of tilting the other way...
