By opposing the war, France at least puts up a facade that they are on a moral high ground. A facade that is easily seen through, but nonetheless it exists.

Now that they've been faced down, they are effectively spinning a 180 wrt Saddam and Iraq. Rather than having the appearance of moral leaders, the French now are seen as nothing more than opportunistic wimps.

The French people who a majority of supported Chirac - this I would attribute to the typical down with America attitude that the French people seem to have always had.
