Two old Air Force guys- We have enough stories to fill those three books you read, and more! I guess I fell in love with the B-52 and the KC-147, I was on a SAC base. I couldn't go to sleep at night unless I could hear them warming up in the bullpen. I worked on the flight line a lot.

A SAC base having an ORI with the beautiful 8 engine 52s taking off in 1 minute intervals is a sight to behold. Wind shear would bounce them all over the place. Looked like big birds trying to fly off with the ten foot lift on the wings.

I was one of the lucky ones to see a a 52 land with no vertical tail section. Civilian test pilots glided it in like they were landing on butter.

The Gooney bird was a pilots delight. Very safe, stable plane as long as you don't try to buzz the tree tops with them. You might get downed with small arms fire doing that. Glad you weren't sitting where that arrow came through! (laugh)
