Doesn't the New York Times employ editors anymore?

Despite tb's recent move to NYC, there seems to be a shortage of aggressive editors there. The New Yorker, an otherwise fine magazine, lets Hersh do whatever he wants.

Perhaps some writers get a lot more latitude than others. Perhaps the editorial culture is changing. Perhaps the near-immunity from defamation claims has loosened fact-checking and corroboration standards.
