Nadine, I don't know what the Moslem Islamic rules are, but women seem to be given the burden of 'virtue'. Which actually is much the same in the Western World, though virtue is a largely forgotten talent these days [especially if we believe movies reflect reality, which in my experience they seem to do].

In the Good Old Days in New Zealand, women were largely responsible for virtue, [they didn't take the responsibility too seriously, but more or less did - though shotgun weddings were pandemic].

That makes some sense because women produce the babies and then there's the question of who the heck is going to look after them? In the days when every new baby was another mouth to feed and obesity wasn't the problem it is these days and women could and did hatch them by the dozen, there was very good reason to reduce the random babies.

It wouldn't have been all that certain exactly who the father was, so stoning to death some poor sod who was allegedly the father might not contribute to solving the problem of extra unwanted mouths. I suppose infanticide would be a way out and that's been a common practise too.

The unwanted babies and rampant disease can be stopped by stopping one half of the sexual equation. Since women seem to be the ones who are more inclined to refrain from sex with the profusion of propositioners, it makes sense that they be the gatekeepers - they seem to have more talent for it.

Given the AIDS epidemic catastrophe in Africa, it's understandable that Nigerian Moslems [who have very low infection rates] are pretty smug about their superiority to the barbarians to the south who follow ignorant western ways with no morals. A lot of cultural practises have been forged in millennia of survival. We chuck them at our peril. A damn good stoning can do some good in society.

Of course, with the world so transformed over the past century or two, such atavistic cultural practises are increasingly irrelevant, anachronistic and sometimes grotesque ideas which should be ditched.

Knowing which ones is the problem. Gangsta Rap nihilism is the ground zero of 21st century cultural practises. Young people traditionally overthrow tradition, accepting only those ideas which they accept as germane to their perceptions of wassup bro. The young are continuing the tradition - good little darlings that they are.

I agree with them. Let's have a big New World Order convention in Saddam's palaces. Kofi could start organizing it now. We need a new UN and we need it now.

Out with the old, in with the new.
