Stephen Harper
From office of the leader of the opposition.

“We have seen nations in the past support a military action without sending forces, but this is the first time we have ever seen a country not support a military action and send forces anyway. What a bizarre position.”

- Stephen Harper on the Liberal Government’s decision that Canada will not support an American-led war.

Iraq
Today, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced that Canada will not participate in any military action in Iraq, due to a failure by the United States, Great Britain, and Spain to secure a new Security Council resolution enforcing Resolution 1441. The Liberal Government has never shown leadership on the question of a potential war in Iraq. It is clear that today’s decision was taken for purely political reasons. In the first major international crisis of the century, the Liberal Government has chosen not to support our closest allies. Instead, it has chosen to disengage from our allies, and further diminish our international credibility.

The Liberals have flip-flopped on their earlier declared position - confirmed by a vote in the House of Commons - that UN Security Council Resolution 1441 is sufficient to authorize force in the event of Iraqi non-compliance. Not a single member of the UN Security Council claims that Saddam Hussein has fully complied with Resolution 1441. This announcement is typically muddled: while not politically supporting the use of force to disarm Saddam Hussein, the government has committed troops to the region. This is the height of hypocrisy. Our troops in the region deserve a clear message about their role from the government that sent them there.

I hope your son or daughter came home safely. I hope you're not proposing that we compete for whose family has sacrificed the most in the wars of the 20th century.

I was responding to your question as to what Canada has contributed to the West's efforts to support democracy or whatever.

You still have not responded to the tardy and reluctant entries of the US into WW I (1917 I belive) and II (only after Pearl Harbour) and their isolationist policies at the time. I admit that you did help the Brits with ships and supplies.
