<<Gas prices from summer of 2000 until now have cost the average driver a lot. >>

Gas prices are about to plunge. Here in Detroit the vehicle most difficult to get is the new H2 Hummer. Got mine a couple months ago and I sure am looking forward to the decrease in fuel costs. One Bad Ass SUV though.

I think hybrids are going to catch on like wildfire. I've already seen them introduced in mainstream models by Honda, like the Civic four door. Ford is set to start selling a hybrid SUV later this year that gets 40 MPG. That's the car I might wind up buying next year. I think that will be a big seller eventually. Think of all the savings in gas over the standard 15 to 20 MPG SUV. That SUV will pay for itself. Once Ford introduces their hybrid SUV, other auto companies won't be far behind.

Of course, high gas prices would help the hybrid market in a big way. But oil and gas prices are likely to plumment after the war with Iraq is over, especially with the world economy in recession. In any case, hybrids just have to reach a threshold and they will most likely take over. In three or four years, you might not be able to even buy a standard ICE car anymore, they might all go over to hybrid. If they can adapt it to an SUV and a Civic, they can adapt hybrid technology to any car or light truck/SUV.

For more information about Ford's new hybrid SUV product and Honda's hybrid Civic, see:

fordvehicles.com
hondacars.com

It gets an average of about 35 MPG, not 40 MPG. It's 40 MPG city, and 29 MPG highway. One strange thing about hybrids is that their fuel economy is reversed from the standard ICE. They get better milage in city driving than highway driving. Wonder why? Perhaps, they'll improve that in future models.

Demand for hybrid cars has now exceeded demand

A little confusing, maybe supply should be inserted for one of the demands?
