Re : Tahieri's recent article

Much of what he says is true, but France is not just concerned with the Arab states, but Africa in general. Since I've followed things, there has been growing anxiety over African states moving closer to the US and what can be done about it. Clinton's African tour received a lot of attention at the time for this reason.

It's very true that there's a French commingling of commercial and diplomatic "affairs", and this is effectively true of the US as well. That high profile ELF kickback / corruption case that has been going on for years is still in the news, though they've got their hands on a set of scapegoats (Sirven, Le Floch-Prigent... ) and the really high up people in the French government can sleep well.

I must say you called it though, I myself thought the whole Iraq affair was a bluff, almost to last night ! Mobilization schmobilization... all those early troop statistics posted here were just noise in the final analysis.

If this doesn't backfire it'll be seen as a brilliant but risky move. On French radio and TV they're already discussing not getting in on the Post Saddam rebuilding of Iraq.
