Thanks for the notes on the Charlie Rose show last night, Bill. On Dana Priest's argument that the military doesn't do nation building well and doesn't like doing it, she documents this point well and densely in her book. On the one hand, she tells several very pointed stories from Kosovo to illustrate how the military was unprepared to do it. And, on the other hand, she uses stories from Zinni's period as a Cinc commander, to illustrate how no other agency of the US government is equipped to do it either. And this was under Clinton. One can imagine that these governmental agency capabilities have deteriorated even further under Bush. Who agrees with the congressional Republicans who refused Clinton's requests.

If one wishes to understand the beginning contours of the military aspects of the new American empire, I recommend her book. Highly. But it's not Halberstam. She is no intellectual heavy weight. An excellent reporter with a good story and a definite angle.
