PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNOR PROPOSES BEER TAX HIKE
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has proposed a substantial raise in the state excise tax on beer, from 8 cents to 25 cents per gallon, saying it would raise $50 million for his statewide school, property tax and economic development reforms. He can expect plenty of opposition from bar and restaurateurs lobbying at the state capitol in Harrisburg. "It's time they used their imagination and came up with another thing to tax," said Tom Pastorius, president of Pennsylvania Brewing in Troy Hill, Pittsburgh. "Beer is not a sin. Beer is good for you and everybody should drink beer."
