But if I'm asked for a prediction and have to base such a prediction on past behavior and statement, I expect a genuinely petty negative act from the Bush folk.

I'm afraid that this is simply naivete. The French assured Collin Powell that they would be supportive of "serious consequences" when they signed onto 1441. Instead, they stabbed him in the back with their unexpected volte face, fanning the flames of anti-Americanism throughout the globe. Moreover, they held Blair's feet to the fire and torpedoed his resolution by responding to it before Iraq had a chance to speak, a grave diplomatic offense. This is execrable behavior on the part of a purportedly friendly ally.

This was not a petty tiff over steel quotas or some other commercial matter.

How can they be trusted when the chips are down? They are not our friend and we shouldn't treat them as allies. There are a few areas in which there are common interests, but there will be repercussions. The US gov't and its citizens will find ways to make them pay.

The French stance was very ill-advised, a fact which is being slowly recognized in Europe.

Generally speaking with the US media conglomerates now, I am reminded of the old sailor's lament: "Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink."
