No, not in the slightest far fetched.

To my knowledge China is a huge oil importer and their attitude could be:

-- first they take Iraq
-- then Iran
-- they solidify their grip on the Saudis
-- after that the UAR is a no-brainer
-- they already have Kuwait by the "cojones"

so where does that put us poor Chinese?

Maybe we should grab Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan...?

Precisely. This conquest isn't about access to oil. We have access to oil already. It's is about CONTROL of oil, because control of oil translates into control of the global economy. This war is about projection of power, human rights be damned.
