Many Americans are as willing to demonize Chinese, as Arabs are willing to demonize Americans. In both those cases (and, unfortunately, many others), huge numbers of people, often abetted by their governments and a systematic propaganda campaign, habitually believe the worst possible motivations about the Other.

Once this process is well advanced, it makes compromise and co-existence very difficult, as one or both sides tend toward uncompromising maximalist positions. As we see with the current American policy toward N. Korea, negotiation is seen as appeasement, when your opponent is seen as deeply evil.
