Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothin' Left To Lose - McDonough?
March 20, 2003

William McDonough, outgoing president of the New York Fed, said today that war worries were not the only things holding back economic growth in America. In covering McDonough's speech, Reuters wrote: "[T]he effects of the bursting of the stock market bubble had proven far more long term and pervasive than expected." So, while Greenspan's story is the "soft spot" is primarily the result of geopolitical risks and oil-price premiums (I burn regular, myself), McDonough seems to be sounding a dissenting view. Just as some Iraqi colonels are likely to distance themselves (literally) from Saddam in the hours ahead, McDonough seems to be distancing himself from Greenspan. It's amazing how retirement can set the truth free.
