JOHANNESBURG – Durban Roodepoort Deep [JSE:DUR] has rejected claims from its former company secretary, Maryna Eloff, that its directors were guilty of insider trading. Eloff said in a public letter of resignation earlier this month that directors had sold shares knowing the company’s mines were likely to produce poor results in the March quarter. Durban Roodepoort Deep (DRD) said trading in the company’s share by directors referred to the exercising of options were conducted in “a personal capacity” and related to payment of provisional tax for the 2002/3 fiscal year. “All trades took place in an open period and do not relate to any operational issues,” DRD said in a statement.

However, the South African gold producer conceded that its operations had been affected by the strengthening of the local currency, the rand, and a fire at its 40 percent held Johannesburg gold mine, ERPM. The rand has gained more than 20 percent since last year which has lowered the price received for DRD’s gold exports....
