It is not the war efforts they oppose; it is a strong Kurdistan inside Iraq. Over the years Turkey has lost 20,000 people to its own Kurdish population. It is terrified that any strengthening of the Kurds will have grave consequences for them. Of course the real solution is not to oppress its own Kurdish population, but I don't think main stream Turkish politics is ready for that. I've heard that some 120,000 Kurds took refuge in Turkey during the first Gulf war. Many it seems want to move back into Iraq, and of course they'd be moving to major Kurdish cities like Mousel and Kirkook (sp?). Turkey, I've heard, is trying to prevent that migration.

Bush really made a big mistake not appreciating Iran after Afghanistan war. Iran can simplify the Iraqi situation a very big way. Iran has huge influence on Iraqi Shia who make up 2/3 of Iraqi population. And there is very close cultural and historical ties between Iranians and Kurds. So much so that most Iranians consider Kurds as being also Iranian...btw, today is the New Year's day in Kurdistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and few other places. It is the cultural equivalent of Dec.25 and Jan.1 wrapped into one.

...Bush's snafu with Iran was perhaps much greater mistake than his mistake with Europe.
