It's not about individuals.

It's about governments.

During the Vietnam era, as junior in college, I organized and led very large demonstrations at military bases. I don't remember saying "nasty" things to enlisted personal, nor do I recall hearing any from them (they tended to be in uniform). The civilians were another story.

It pretty much seemed to me that we had an opinion and they had an opinion and whoever yelled louder was right that day. (The folks I really came to appreciate and thanked frequently were the police!)

A year later, there were Vietnam Vets returning to college (some as seniors) and some became close friends. We would debate policy vehemently, but we didn't insult each other.

We don't have a beef with the Iraqi people either, just their government.

I think it is possible for us to distinguish between the two.
