"The whole is in fact a system -- a philosophy of foundational values going back to Ben Franklin and before. It's a social and political system rooted in mavericks, innovation, risk-taking, open intellectual argument, impatience, creative change, failure, the frontier spirit, competition and a compulsion to get ahead." so true and add in the millions of immigrants during that huge surge in the early 1900's - people who simply wanted a chance, the opportunity, for a better life - people who were willing to work for that and did America has been and will always be THE melting pot of the world
