Just speculation. But since I read the initial report from that observer I'd assume she made a mistake in judgment and died for it. The picture was a powerful political statement on her part, though, and she would certainly have been proud of it's publication.

There was a college student who climbed half way up a well-known building here in December. Then he jumped backward and fell to his death. He had some kind of leftwing literature on Iraq on him. He was yelling something that was probably some kind of political message but no one could hear what he had to say. He jumped during morning drive time - the building is near the intersection of the West Loop and I59. Clearly a case of suicide for a political cause. So young impressionable and yes, foolish, people do do that occasionallly.
