The reality you speak of is not there. You are comparing them to the Taliban and to Saddam. Both were intellectually void, politically inept, and morally reprehensive to the Muslims, and operationally empty handed. None of this is true about the hardliners in Iran. Sure the Iranian public doesn't like them, but outside of Iran they have good reach. And even inside Iran, if US was to take very hard-line against Iran, whose side do you think the population will take?
