The point is you are not even helping it along. In fact, the US has always found it easier to work with dictators -- kind of a one-stop shop. Look at what happened with Turkey.

Pakistan did have a democratically elected leader up until a few years ago when Musharraf took over. I have to say that supporting Musharraf probably makes sense here, because if we let Pakistan fall into the hands of radical islamists, with all their nuclear weapons, we could really have a headache on our hands. But, ultimately we should work for a return to democracy.
