Dell printer launch planned for next week
Friday March 21, 1:19 pm ET

NEW YORK, March 21 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - News), the world's second largest personal computer maker, will announce its computer printer plans next week, a company spokeswoman said on Friday.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell in September signed a deal with printer maker Lexmark International Inc. (NYSE:LXK - News) for the two companies to develop and produce Dell-branded printers. Since then it has said little about what types of printers it would make.

Earlier this month, Chief Executive Michael Dell indicated that the printer launch would come by the end of the month, she said.

"There's a week left in this month so it's obviously reasonable to assume we will be making an announcement," Dell spokeswoman Mary Fad said.

Dell will be competing with No. 1 computer printer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - News).

Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff said in a research note recently that the entry of Dell, which is known for using its volume and direct sales to customers to cut prices, into the printer market would have a minimal impact on Dell, HP and Lexmark in the near-term.
