Jacob - The second half of the post is my Alternative.

There is no second half to your post except that we shouldn't have gone to war. Well, too late. Given that we are where we are: Colonialism or Abandonment? The problem with creating false dilemmas is that it limits one's own thinking.

BTW - There is very clearly a big difference between colonialism at one end of the spectrum, which is exploitative, and nation building which is collaborative. (Note that in a collaboration BOTH parties benefit AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. Many people on the left seem to think that the world is a zero sum game - that if the richer country ends up better off than something bad happened.)
