In all, 170 alleged al Qaeda operatives have been put under formal investigation in EU countries since the September 11 attacks. Of these, 153 are in jail, according to AFP estimates.

France tops the list of al-Qaeda hunters with 56 suspects followed by Italy with 35, Belgium 19, Britain and the Netherlands 16, Germany 15 and Spain 13.
