The shoe has more significance than many may realize.

First, it is important to note that after he stopped hitting the poster, he waved the shoe to make sure that the camera saw the shoe.

In Arabic culture, using the shoe in this manner is an insult. It is such a sensitive issue, that if you were visiting an arabic neighbor, sitting in his home and crossed your legs in such a manner that would show the bottom of your shoe, it would be considered extremely rude.
