Hi Pat,

I am watching a fascinating segment on the Anti-War Teach-In currently in progress at American University on C-SPAN when they decided to preempt the anti-war coverage with an inane and deceitful "briefing" from the Pentagon that said nothing. The anti-war teach-in is currently on C-SPAN. (see address above)

[[Note: The network is currently extremely congested. I suggest attempting to view this online at a later time.]]

The moderator at American University introduced the Veterans For Common Sense speaker with a quote from one of the best investigative reporters that this nation has ever produced, I. F. Stone. Stone often prefaced his comments at meetings like this (during the Vietnam fiasco) with a key quote: "Governments Lie". All Americans should consider it their democratic duty to understand this and act accordingly.

When he was interrupted, the speaker at the teach-in was addressing the issue that the Bush junta has completely gone over to deceit and lies to sell their war. The speaker quoted Herman Goering, the Carl Rove of 1930's Germany, on the nature of leadership and the cynical manipulation of public opinion. Here's that quote:

: "Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
