Last week the lead story of nytimes magazine, which focused on health issues in the US, had an interesting title, Hard Cures, which is where we’re at unfortunately, it opened with the following quote. After coming through a long malpractice suit, a physician friend of mine said to me, ''Now I think of the patient as the enemy.'' Something in this struck me as echoing what actualized for this Administration after 911. It is a systemic thing and the standard by which Americans are measuring this diplomatic failure and this dubious war, is the greatness of the US. Now, about those perceptions, and those of the terrorists. That guy mentioned this in that article, so just to repeat…It is the noble cause of Freedom that makes “freedom fighters”, one could say such people are born, others made. Now for some this may come from the earth up while for others it comes from the sky down, but what is at issue here is the perceived loss of control over one’s Destiny. It is an invisible force expressed as a moral obligation to pay back perceived injustice against your people, however this is construed - never mind ‘handling’ this impetus, by shunting it through a strongly Political or Theological prism. Suicide bombing is only understandable as a last gasp attempt to regain your god given pride and your ultimate freedom. This is impossible to stop except by killing them before they kill you, while at the same time providing competition for their souls in the form of good Ideas. It’s impossible to win over a terrorist with a hearts and minds campaign, ok maybe two or three, and that’s what this Iraqi gamble is all about.
