I think the political situation is complex. I think these Islamics are in the mountains with their back to Iran (and probably supported by them). They are in the Kurdish territory, so out of Saddam's reach. The Kurds want to destroy them, but don't have the might. Who knows, maybe they're being characterized as Al Qaeda by the Kurds, so that we'll help wipe them out.
