>>> I just don't see the need to use nukes. Things can be taken care of without the use of them.<<<

Unfortunately, they never listened to the so-called 'peaceniks' who've for decades been calling to get rid of 'em. Even regarding nuclear power, the three primary arguments against them, by 'peacenik' types, were: a) nukes are dangerous; b) there's absolutely no place to store the wastes for a 10,000-year period of time; and c) terrorists would eventually get hold of the materials.

Hey, we were lucky to get recyling adopted. But that came only when the GOPside realized money could be made from doing it.

Agustus, Yes, I agree, I was sort of tongue in cheek on small nuke use.
As for Atomic energy, lots of places good for 10,000 years. Deep ocean glass blocks is one. Deep mines in stable rock formations is another.
better factory automation and more standardisation to bring the costs down and make them perfectly reliable. It is possible to make things properly so they last for a long time. Making 500 sets of them for 500 power stations would give an economy of scale.
Right now almost all US plants are one of a kind....so all the causes for errors all come along with each new plant. Make 5 a year and in a very short while a perfectly relaible and safe desing will emerge. Best to design it safe from the beginninf.
