Commission President Romano Prodi went further, "we also have to draw conclusions from this crises. We can't continue to rely on others to defend our riches, wealth and security." Looking towards transatlantic relations "It is not a question of being friends. We are partners and therefore we need to have a dialogue of equals," Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Papandreou told the European Parliament on Thursday. "Criticising the US is not the same as having a single common policy," external relations Chris Patten continued. "Most of the things we want to achieve as European, we are more likely to be able to achieve if we are able to work with the United States. It is equally the case that most of the things America wants are more likely to be achieved if America can work with the European Union," Mr Patten said. Bad passage for the Common Foreign and Security Policy "Whatever the outcome of the war that has started in Iraq ... there can be no denying that this has been a very bad passage for the Common Foreign and Security Policy; a very bad passage for the EU as a whole; a very bad passage for the authority of the UN; for NATO; and a very bad passage for transatlantic relations," Mr Patten said. One of the strongest remarks during the European Parliament debate in the morning, came from the co-President of the Greens Monica Frassoni. "We remain convinced that if the European Union had one permanent seat at the UN, if it had been obliged by common institutions and binding rules to speak with one voice, the attack tonight could have been avoided." "This is the challenge, which the European Convention has to meet." Written by Sharon Spiteri Edited by Lisbeth Kirk
