That's exactly right. Not going through the U.N. would have meant we would have never started the debate and put it on the international stage. Once we did that, we sealed our fate as the bad guy. If we'd played this lower key and just taken care of the problem, we still would have come off as the bad guy, but at least we could have contained the damage. Now democratizing Iraq is going to be ten times harder. Diplomacy is critical in a complicated world. And what I mean by diplomacy is leaving everyone a way to save face as we take care of business. This administration forgot that.

Oh and by the way, there is nothing consistent about diplomacy. That's just the way the game is played. To think otherwise is naive.
