There may arise circumstances where a true need to defend the US from an attack is necessitated by the action of a hostile government. The global backlash resulting from the invasion of Iraq, seen as unjustified in scope and not necessary due to the lack of overt threat to US security from Iraq by millions of people worldwide, could very well be a consequence of the invasion that may hinder the US from responding to a legitimate threat effectively.
A widening of the conflict would certainly be a catastrophe as well.
The invasion of Iraq would turn into a case where the current group running the White House has shot America in the foot.
