OK- but you know the primary issue with the US and violence

Not that much. While deaths by violence may seem large [they are in actual #s] as a percentage of total deaths, it's small. {I hate to say ~28,000 homicides are small...but in a population of 280 million at a mortality rate of 8/1,000...28,000 isn't that large.

Iraq. When were the majority of people in Iraq "killed". Generally, when the US was supporting Iraq...Iraq was able to carry on a ten year war with Iran only because the US supplied it with arms to do so. Iraq gassed a lot of Kurds, Iraq was a US ally at that time. The US goverment even assigned blame to Iran for that atrocity.

Saddam is/was a butcher. And he was a bigger butcher when the US was his ally. Saddam isn't a different person that he was in 1980. The difference is strictly how many arms he's been supplied with. In circa 1985, he was a big butcher, in 2003 he's a little butcher. I wish we would learn what supplying weapons to third world dictators accomplishes.

It seems like there are all these claims about violence in the US where we are held up against these homogeneous societies like Japan as if that is a fair comparison.

Fair. Your mother promised you fair? Mine didn't <s>. Seriously, I'm more confused as to why we are so much more upset at 3,000 deaths in a one-off than we are at 28,000 homicides per year, year in, year out. As long as we do it to ourselves, it seems to be an acceptable level. Go figure.
