Take off your rose-colored glasses. The markets surged, as predicted, as the war began. Investors were waiting to buy to try and catch the war bounce. But this bounce is a short-term phenomenon. Anyone who bought Friday is a sucker. Tomorrow they may start back down, level off or go back down again because of fundamentals in our economy.

Yes oil prices were abnormally high and now they're coming down a bit but they're still too high and consumers are still being gouged.

Europeans tax oil heavily because they want to keep down consumption and pollution. They have very efficient cars. Their old city cobblestone streets are also not built for traffic, but for horses. The oil taxes pay for the best mass transit system in the world. In Europe you dont even need a car. Trains are everywhere and can whisk you where you want to go in a timely fashion.

Though American is different, we could learn some things from the Europeans, considering we have the worst mass transit system in the world and we have to fight wars in the Middle East to preserve our oil flow. We even threaten to "harvest" our wilderness areas and seacoasts. All because we use too much of the stuff and are completely addicted to it.

The best answer is to not only start buying efficnet hybrid cars but to start getting OFF OIL now. But that will take a new president and a major committment. One of the major reasons I'm fighting to help John Kerry. He will make a big difference. In the future we should not even have to be in the Middle East. It is a quagmire and terrorism will continue there for decades.
