To: marcos who wrote (2142 ) 3/23/2003 3:03:49 PM From: marcos Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 37176 'our PM at the time was Lester Bowles Pearson ' - not so, doh, he was foreign minister in the St Laurent government, it was later he was PM, after Diefenbaker There was a major split in the country over this, much controversy and deep division over the fact that here we were allying ourselves with the US against the UK .... for many years after the grudges remained, over the splitting of the Commonwealth .... yet it was the right thing to do, under the circumstances, the brits themselves recognised this in short order, they turfed out Anthony Eden over it But canadian forces invented peacekeeping at this time .... the US could not, it was seen as a big hammer looking for nails, even then ..... attempts had been made to set up workable observer contingents elsewhere, but the cold-war dynamics had stymied them, the UN could not itself set up effective forces, so they had to improvise, and canadians led the effort, literally wrote the book on the concept, with our general Burns in command .... peacekeeping did not always work well - when Nasser ordered us out in 1967, we complied, then the israelis attacked, it was a considerable blow to national honour here, the process seemed futile and was intensely questioned .... almost died out for a while, save for a few troops left in Cyprus and some other places Much as they were being protected by our peacekeepers, the egyptians objected vehemently to the presence of canadians, as our uniforms and symbols like the red ensign were to them too reminiscent of the UK ... it was this that led Pearson to believe that we needed our own symbols, unique to us alone, hence the Pearson Pennant a few years later .... according to Mel Hurtig in a big fat book here, anyway [Lino will love the source, lol]
