Do you trust the UN to be the collection clerk? The Coalition will take care of that, and go on to tame murderous Islam...

Agreed on the UN. It gives us legitimacy. Shields us from world contempt. There are certain times we can carefully move without the UN, but they are not a force to dismiss lightly as so many Bushies are doing now. There are also many other issues other than military which are pressing in the world, in fact, in the long run these others issues are arguably more important. Such as environment, over-population, food and water, all related to survival of the human race in the future. We are not immune despite being the richest nation. And UN labor on these projects is a hell of a lot cheaper than sending our high-paid people to do the grunt work.

One thing that gets dismissed a lot during the GW years is the whole global spirit started by JF Kennedy, to be the benevolent leaders of the world, not the new tyrants. We have to be very careful about this, which is why humanitarism, diplomacy and cooperation is so important, back to the importance of the UN. Bush Sr. used the UN to tremendous effect during the Gulf War.
