I basically agree with you. The problem is that there are a large number of dictatorial and brutal regimes on the planet. During the Cold War, little could be done about many of them because of the threat of turning it into a hot war. That has changed.

But still: Let's say the US, UK, Canada, Australia- -the decent nations- -formed a coalition. There is still only so much that could be done. How do we differentiate what gets cleaned up and what does not?

And isolationism is no longer a practical answer. Once the US and Canada could rely on two broad oceans for protection. That is no longer true. Now if a serious danger arises, it may very well be best to handle it before it gets serious.
