> Are we trying to be in charge of Iran?

We were when we overthrew a democratically elected government in Iran and put Shah in charge.

> Syria?

Not yet...wait for the Bush to get around to it.

> Egypt? Saudia?

Most certainly in both cases.

> I agree that we try to export the ideas of 18th century liberal thought.

I don't. We are trying to export our life style because that is the most effective way to create market for American goods. But we are not interested in the ideas to be exported.

> I don't know of a single nation which doesn't try to use whatever tools of persuasion it has available to try to advance what it sees as its national interests wrt other nations.

Well, if I was more idealistic, I would argue that such an act is wrong. But I am not. What I am arguing is that our long term or even medium term interests are not served by our policy stance. And when I say "our interests" I am talking about the American people.

> Would you really want a government running the country who didn't feel that way in the bottom line?

Yes, I do. But the full explanation will take too long. Do keep your family's interests above everyone else's? Of course you do. Does that make you commit every crime for them? Not unless you absolutely have to. Now why is that? The logic of our everyday behaviour is the logic I use for international affairs.
