I'm sure the our friends at the Fed had a hand in it as well. It wouldn't look very good if the dollar (and therefore the market) tanked even further coincident with the start of the war.

Never the less neither of these interventions would be able to overcome even moderate systematic selling on the part of those countries which don't agree with our war policy.

Such an initiative would have had gotten the attention of a number of people in Washington and New York much more effectively than speeches at the UN.

Frankly I am somewhat amazed at the world's continued willingness to rely on the dollar as a reserve currency now that we have made it very clear that we don't intend to even pretend to represent any interests other than our own, either concerning our foreign policy or our monetary and fiscal policy.

Further, as you point out, since long term prospects for the dollar suck, they really don't have that much to loose.
