That having the support of either country is a fantasy to begin with. Operationally speaking, having either one as an ally would of course offer more immediate and practical advantage than wooing the French. But it was never in the realm of real possibilities. Therefore it's specious to portray not having either as ally as failure of diplomacy.

Without bases, it's academic how near or far or extensive the borders are.
