Reverened Al Sharpton, according to the latest Zogby survey, leads all other Democratic presidential hopefuls among New York City Democrats with 13%. Sharpton is in third place overall in the state, and not far from #1. You tell me that this party has itself together? Years of bumbling by the likes of the Ted Kennedys who are anti-everything, has laid the groundwork for this.

It helps him too that you have B-actors and ex-presidents Carter and Clinton out there bashing everything Bush does. Sharpton's latest brilliant move is, according to our old buddy Joel Rosenberg in Des Moines, to propose a flat tax. That's one part of his three-point plan, the anti-war position being another, and a $250 billion, five-year plan to "create jobs and rebuild bridges and highways and tunnels," etc. is the third.

The Reverend Sharpton is the only one with a personality in this bunch. That's why he's driving the Democrats nuts. John F. Kerry campaign manager Jim Jordan worried that the party "will be fragmented" by Sharpton. Will be? You won't hear the words "flat tax" out of any Democrat's mouth. You combine this with Gov. Bill Richardson - a tax traitor as far as Democrats are concerned - saying lower taxes equal jobs and economic booms.

New Zogby Poll Shows Lieberman as Leading Democratic Candidate for 2004 Presidential Nomination in New York State; Sharpton Leads in NYC

Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, Gore's vice presidential running mate in the 2000 Election, leads the list of Democratic contenders for the 2004 Presidential nomination in New York State, but nearly four in ten likely Democratic voters remain undecided.

The poll of 345 likely Democratic New York voters was conducted by Zogby International on February 22-23, and has a margin of error of +/- 5.4%. Margins are higher in sub-groups.

Lieberman earned 14% of the vote, followed by Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt (12%), Civil rights advocate Rev. Al Sharpton (9%), and Massachusetts Senator John Kerry (7%). North Carolina Senator John Edwards tallied 4% of the respondents, followed by former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, former Senator and Ambassador Carol Moseley-Braun, and former Colorado Senator and presidential contender Gary Hart, all at 3%.

The New York State primary election is likely to be held in June 2004, nearly 16 months away. At this early date, 38% of likely Democratic primary voters say they are still undecided.

Different regions of the state favor different candidates

The Zogby New York poll showed Gephardt as the favorite candidate Upstate with nearly a 2-1 lead over Lieberman (17-10%) and Kerry in third place with 8%.

In New York City, Sharpton was the strongest with 13% of the vote, followed closely by Lieberman (12%) and Gephardt (11%).

On Long Island and the counties North of New York City to the Catskills, Lieberman commanded the most support (21%), followed by Kerry (14%) and Gephardt (12%). The county list includes Nassau and Suffolk on Long Island and the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester.
